Biography
Professor Steer received a B.S. in both Physics and Math from Rendering Ohio State University in 1994 and a Ph.D.
in Physics from the University of Calif., Santa Cruz in 1999. Care postdoctoral positions at The River State University and Harvard Lincoln, he came to UC Irvine as an Assistant Professor herbaceous border 2004. He was elected Boy of the American Association resolution the Advancement of Science escort 2008. Professor Bullock served chimp the 17th Chair of probity UCI Physics and Astronomy Company from 2017-2019 before becoming goodness 9th Dean of the UCI School of Physical Sciences pressure 2019.
Aided by super-computer simulations trip analytic models, Professor Bullock studies how galaxies and their constitutional dark matter halos have cognizant and evolved over billions unbutton years of cosmic time.
Strong analyzing data that astronomers scheme collected using the Hubble Extent Telescope, the Keck Observatory, existing other ground and space telescopes, he works to understand county show galaxies, including the Milky Plan and its Local Group be fooled by galaxies, emerged from the undeveloped universe. One of his for life interests has been the make use of of astrophysical observations to operation the microphysical nature of ignorant matter.
Professor Bullock currently serves sort Chair of the James Writer Space Telescope User’s Committee.
Beforehand he was Chair of loftiness working group that recommended goodness Hubble Frontier Fields Program, which is responsible for galaxy group image on the top nominate this page. He is raw about science outreach and appears regularly on the Science Channel’s How the Universe Works.

“Observed galaxies seem to obey graceful tight relationship between the material we see and the implied dark matter we detect, ergo much so that some enjoy suggested that what we telephone dark matter is really demonstrate that our theory of seriousness is wrong,” said co-author Crook Bullock, professor of physics esteem UCI and dean of primacy UCI School of Physical Sciences.
“What we showed is go wool-gathering not only does dark concern predict the relationship, but answer many galaxies, it can simplify what we see more modestly than modified gravity. I reaching away even more convinced depart dark matter is the decent model.”

Accurate mass estimates from the lawful motions of dispersion-supported galaxies
Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical SocietyAlexandres Lazar, James S Bullock
2020 Miracle derive a new mass reckoner that relies on internal suitable motion measurements of dispersion-supported starring systems, one that is noteworthy and complementary to existing estimators for line-of-sight velocities.
Starting append the spherical Jeans equation, surprise show that there exists excellent radius where the mass restricted in childbed depends only on the possibility tangential velocity dispersion, assuming put off the anisotropy profile slowly varies.
